The second leg of FIS Roller Ski World Cup starts in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia next week. The races will take place on August 22-25.
The World Cup cycle consists of three legs and World Championships. The first leg was held in Beijing, China, then athletes were competing in World Championships races in Madona, Latvia. Now it is time to go to Khanty-Mansiysk. The World Cup cycle will end in Ziano di Fiemme and Alpe Cermis, Italy.
Khanty-Mansiysk leg consist of three races – pursuit, sprint and mass-start. The first two competition days – prologue and pursuit – will be held at Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center, while sprint And mass-start will take place on the city streets.
Like a year ago 200m track for sprint will start at the central square of Khanty-Mansiysk and go up to the Church of Christ’s Resurrection. The last race of the leg – mass start – will will also start at the city square, go by the picture gallery of the artist Gennady Raishev towards the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas, pass by the Boris Losev Park and return back to the starting point. The decision to change the track was made in order to make it more complicated, with uphills, downhills and turns. This will make the race even more spectacular and exciting both for participants and viewers.
2K race in the city center was made possible because of the close cooperation of the organizing committee of the event and the administration of Khanty-Mansiysk. It was necessary not only to prepare the track but to organize the safety measures, alternative public transport routes and inform the city dwellers about these temporary changes.
Currently applications were received from more than 100 participants from 7 countries – Italy, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Thailand. Among them are many-time medalist of Roller Ski World Championships Alena Prochazkova of Slovakia, world champions Ragnar Andresen of Norway and Alessio Berlanda of Italy, as well as the current leader of the women’s total score, many-time world champion Linn Soemskar from Sweden.
It worth noting, that Eugeniy Dementiev from Ugra is one of the leaders of Russian roller ski team. In 2017 he became a winner and a medalist of Roller Ski World Championpionships. This year Evgeniy became 6th in individual race and 5th in mass-start.
