The capital of Ugra undergoes the final preparations for the coming FIS Roller Ski World Cup, which will be held in Khanty-Mansiysk on August 22-25. The first participants of the event are already training on the Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center.
The marketing department of “UgraMegaSport” and the World Cup volunteers are currently decorating the biathlon center of Khanty-Mansiysk with banners and flags with the logos of the event and its official sponsors. Most of the technical work on preparing the tracks for the competitions has already been completed.
Three days before the start of the races here you can also meet athletes who continue to prepare for the upcoming World Cup. An olympic champion from Ugra Eugeniy Dementiev has recently returned to Khanty-Mansiysk from the Roller Ski World Championships in Latvia and is determined to compete for medals at his home leg of the World Cup.
The program of the competitions of the Ugra stage includes 3 disciplines – pursuit, sprint and mass start. The first two days of the event include prologue, the results of which will determine the handicap for the pursuit. The first medal winners of the World Cup will be determined on the tracks of Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center on Friday, while sprint and mass start will be held on the streets of Khanty-Mansiysk.
“My main task in prologue is to have as good position for pursuit as possible to compete in comfortable conditions on the second day. Then there will be sprint – the most spectacular discipline. Everything happens in front of the viewers – emotions, speed, struggle for every centimeter of the distance. I like to watch sprint most of all. Mass start is also very interesting to watch,” – says an olympic champion Eugeniy Dementiev.
The vice-president of Ugra Ski Federation, main coach of cross-country team of Ugra Sergey Kryanin thinks that Roller Ski World Cup will be a good rehearsal before the World Championships 2021. “This is the second time we are hosting World Cup leg. This year we will have a race that will take two days to define the winners consisting of prologue and pursuit. Sprint and mass-start will also be very spectacular and exciting. We will watch up to 70 athletes running along the city streets at the same time. This year we will have a new track for mass-start. We put all our efforts to make this event as good as possible. The government of the region, the department of sports of Ugra and “UgraMegaSport” will do their best to conduct these competitions on the highest level, because we made a bid for the Roller Ski World Championships 2021 in Khanty-Mansiysk», – says he.
In the end of the day the organizing committee of the Roller Ski World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk had a meeting with the chief referee of the event Victor Grigoriev and the representative of Russian cross-country skiing federation Vyacheslav Vedenin. The members of the delegation expressed their opinion that Ugra is completely ready to host the competitions and hoped this would guarantee that the right to host the Roller Ski World Championships 2021 will be given to Khanty-Mansiysk.
Currently more than 100 athletes from 7 countries – Italy, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Thailand – are going to come to Khanty-Mansiysk to participate in the coming World Cup races. Among them are many-time medalist of Roller Ski World Championships Alena Prochazkova of Slovakia, world champions Ragnar Andresen of Norway and Alessio Berlanda of Italy, as well as the current leader of the women’s total score, many-time world champion Linn Soemskar from Sweden.
