At the present time the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra is an independent subject of the federation, with the population of 1,5 million people with a 2% of indigenous small-numbered people of North: khanty, mansi and forest nentsy who are still leading a traditional lifestyle. Khanty-Mansiysk experiences a subarctic climate. The climate is extreme, with temperatures as low as -49 C and as high as 34.5 C. However the region is very cold with an average temperature of 1.1 C. Precipitation tends to be fairly low; 553 millimeters per year.

Today, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug is taking leading positions among other subjects of the Russia in terms of the manufacturing, electricity production, oil and gas production, volume of investment in the new capital stock and tax income into the budget system.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug is mostly famous for the oil production since 1960. The region produces around 7% of the world oil production and about a half of the Russian. There are 466 oil and gas deposits opened on Ugra territory. The total length of the pipe work is 102 938 km, 73 billion of barrels of the cumulative production.

The sportsmen of Ugra are being trained in the 56 youth sports schools where 5500 teachers-trainers are working and in the teams of the autonomous okrug formed by the centre of the athletic performance of the teams of Ugra. “Ski-track of Russia”, “Cross of the Nation”, “Christmas skiing race” are the most popular sporting public events among other national competition.
